Part 1: LGBT+ Artists You Should Know
Some artists you may not know are within the LGBTQ+ Community, but our generation is the voice of change and we have to educate people to become more aware of pronouns, beliefs and choices.
As part of the UK’s LGBT+ History Month we highlight some of our favourite artists who have openly come out. In 2017 the UK it is estimated that 4.2% of people aged 16-24 identify themselves within the LGBTQ+ community.
Born in Japan but raised in London, Sawayama released her debut album in 2020 after signing to Dirty Hit which lead to her winning the Attitude (British gay lifestyle magazine) Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. She has been open about being pansexual and called for an improvement of the rights of sexual minorities and has also signed an open letter to the UK Equalities minister calling for a ban on all forms of conversion therapy.
A groundbreaking artist in many ways, Otep Shamaya is one of the very few female metal vocalists in male-dominated metal scene and only one who is openly a lesbian. She released her debut album with her band Otep in 2002 and was the first woman to play at the Ozzfest. Otep has been open about her sexuality since the beginning of her career despite the fact that coming out is not very common in the metal community.
Ashe O’Hara is a British metal vocalist of the band Voices From The Fuselage originating from Northampton. They released their debut album ‘Odyssey: The Destroyer of Worlds’ and the follow-up ‘Odyssey: The Founder of Dreams’ in 2018. O’Hara was also a lead vocalist of TesseracT, another British progressive metal act, from 2012 to 2014.
Lead vocalist of a black metal band Liturgy Hunter Hunt-Hendrix hails from Brooklyn, New York. She came out as a trans woman last year saying she has known of herself being a woman dating back to before her band was even formed but kept quiet out of fear. Their latest studio album ‘Origin of the Alimonies’ was released last November via the singer’s own record label YLYLCYN.
Arlo Parks is a 20-year old British singer-songwriter whose critically acclaimed debut album ‘Collapsed In Sunbeams’ was released earlier this year and peaked at number three on the UK album chart. She has already been labelled ‘a voice of a generation’, though she herself rejects the idea and uses her own experiences to produce truly emotive lyrics, including those revolving around her bisexuality.
